And a Merry HUNT-mas to you!

Wow - there are SO many hunts in December. After getting all my own hunt gifts ready, it's time to go a-hunting myself! But first......

WOMENstuff Hunt part 2 - In honor of the association with breast cancer, a set of Pink Poinsettias to adorn your holiday! The barette is a new item for me. My model is a woman I work with who ALWAYS wears flowers in her hair!

Renaissance Hunt - More traditional jewelry made sense for the Renaissance Hunt. Holly, wreaths, rubies, red, green - all the colors and textures that say Christmas.

Also, Always Eclectic has a booth on Renaissance Island for the season, which coincidentally is the beginning of the Renaissance Hunt! http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Renaissance%20Faire%20Isle/21/185/24

The Christmas Spirit Hunt - I don't like to play favorites amongst my 'kids', but this set game out so elegantly I'm just tickled to death! Studs for, well, the studs of course!

Always Eclectic also has a store at the Dickens Christmas Village for Victorian items: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Mieville%20Kipling/244/14/2502

Last but not least - we're now part of the Stored and Creators list! Fabulous!

The Black Friday Sale is ON!!!!

Black Friday (the annual American day for extreme shopping for the holidays - always the day after our Thanksgiving) sale starts early!

I listed the Pale Amethyst set at 23L$ for the day with the other merchants on the list (get a notecard with all the vendors at my store). Then I decided to expand it and discounted a bunch of BLACK items to 23L$.

Why 23L$? Because Friday is the 23rd of November!

Here's the pics of some of the items on sale. They are all marked with the Black Friday Sale sign shown below.

Release Annoucement Plus Hunt Items!

Lots of stuff going on! I have no idea how the designers that put out new releases weekly or daily manage it! Mee 'at's off to the duke! I do my poor best and am slllooowwwlllyyy getting quicker. I won't sacrifice quality for quick, so don't expect miracles!

Anyway, I have a new release out. One particular color set is the exclusive group gift! Through the in-world group or the subscriber group you can't lose! The burnt orange is for the group - and guys, that pin is not feminine so check it out - and the release includes versions in copper, gold and silver! I found a Victorian piece that I used as a model for this set. I have to say I like how this turned out! ;-))

Now, hunt gifts......drum roll please!!

For WOMENStuff, Elegance in Emerald is your reward for stopping at Always Eclectic! I had fun creating this one. A plain old chain just didn't seem right so I used a little creativity on this one. I hope you like it!

For the Shaken But Not Stirred hunt, not being a huge bond fan, I had to consult with my other half as he loves that kind of stuff. I ended up with male and female gifts.

Diamonds Are Forever shows the precious stones in a swirl of silver. The motion is inherent in the pieces.

Casino Royale is for gents or ladies. Your own personal roulette wheel! It's a lovely pin, not suitable for real gambling though.

And now, on to Christmas!! Whew! It just never stops does it? I hope you all have fun hunting and please take a look around the rest of the store while you're there.

See you soon!

Now On DesigningSL Blogger List!!!

As the old TV show said 'Well, we're movin' on up!!!' The Always Eclectic Blog will be on the DesigningSL blog feed!!! Read that 'Riendra has more incentive to blog more often!' Today, it's not a problem - I have a topic to vent a bit on. Don't worry - vent is a long way from a rant!

The other day, I found myself at the SL-Hunt headquarter's housed with the Cookie Jar store and shopping area. I thought I'd go take a look for December hunts related to the holidays, since I KNOW I want to do the Renaissance Hunt again and the attached Faire!

I was astounded to see that 3 (okay, 2 3/4) of the walls were covered with October hunts!! I realize people like their hunts, but I was reminded about something Kat Alderson said at a seminar. With so many hunts, it's no wonder that people don't want to pay for anything in SL. If they wait long enough, something they like just as well will come out as a freebie in a hunt.

I have no idea how this situation can get turned around, but Kat had one piece of advice for merchants: stop being in so many hunts! Some stores are in 10 or more hunts a month. Does that really increase your sales? Or is it just bringing people that stop by, grab a freebie and leave?

When I moved to my new store location, I put visitor counters at three different locations: landing point, front entrance to the shop, and rear of the shop. Nearly everyday there are some people at the landing point. Once in a while there is traffic at the entrance although a much smaller number. There is rarely any traffic that reaches the back of the store.

That tells me that people are landing and scanning for the freebie, then leaving for the most part. Obviously not everyone does that, but there is a significant number that do.

I realize I don't have the huge inventories that other stores do, so there is less to look at so far. Still, it's rather discouraging. I would be very curious to know what other people, merchants and non-merchants, or even merchants when they aren't being merchants and are just shoppers or hunters, think about this. SL seems to be mimicing RL in that mega-retailers are the only ones that survive long. Or perhaps independently wealthy people in RL that can afford to subsidize their SL businesses forever. It just seems that smaller retailers go out and in frequently, but the big hitters, perhaps those that got big near the beginning of SL, have the advantage at the moment.

I love having my store. I really do. I can't subsidize things forever though. Sooner or later having to spend real money to subsidize my fun will get old. Darn.

Happy Halloween!!!

Hope all you ghouls and goblins are all ready for the big holiday!  Always Eclectic is in The Halloween Hunt with this entry...

I also put an item in the Builder's Brewey Graveyard which features Halloween items from all over the grid - it's amazing at the variety and quality of the items! I won't give away the entry - you'll have to seach for it amongst the dead and nearly dead....bwahahahaha!!!!

I have a few Halloween items for sale at the store in case you just can't get enough.....

And....a new Halloween marotte.....a  not-so-lovely witch with an evil laugh!!

So have a scary good time and get ready for the November hunts - Shaken But Not Stirred and WOMENstuff.

See you soon!

Sane or Sick: Working on SL things on a RL Cruise...You decide

So, here I am, on a RL cruise with my hubby, and what am I doing whenever I'm in the room? You guessed it - working on textures and ideas and paperwork for Always Eclectic! I think my hubby has given up and decided I'm just a hopeless addict so he doesn't say much anymore....just gets more theatrical in his sighs.

There is an ulterior motive.....I have been off RL work since mid-July and my 'vacation,' if you count being in a lot of pain for more than half that time a vacation, will end soon as I will return to work in early October. In my little SL addicted mind, that means HURRY!!!!

I have a bunch of things that I have in-store signs now created. Those should be getting put up sometime in October with any luck.

I'm in The Halloween Hunt, so I've finished my gifty for that, plus a couple of other cool Halloween things.

I have an idea for my gift for the Shaken Not Stirred hunt thanks to hubby and his knowledge of All Things Bond.

That brings me to WOMENstuff hunt and the holidays...whew....

Add to that my involvement in a RL choir that, of course, performs at the holidays, and that my RL dad broke a hip just before my cruise started.....you begin to get the picture.

So I am working my little avatar behind off to get everything ready so Always Eclectic doesn't miss a beat! More lovely little hunt items to create......bwahahahahaha!!!! ;-)))

See you soon!

New! Always Eclectic Petite!

Strider (ariana.farstrider), owner and designer of [S&S] Clockworks came to me with a lovely dress she had designed that was crying out for jewelry.

We threw ideas back and forth, and this cloisonne style set is the result. It grabs the red and black of the dress and adds the butterfly on the pendant for an additional splash of color.

So, Always Eclectic Petite is born! If anyone would like a particular item 'shrunk' for a petite, just send me a notecard and off we go!

Oddly, it isn't that much harder to make jewelry for petites - the pieces are just smaller and require a bit more patience to become cooperative. I think the results are well worth the effort.

Strider and I have traded vendors, so the dress and jewelry are available at either store.

Introducing.....'Regally Yours'!!

I just released a new set called 'Regally Yours.' As the name implies, the set is based on some medieval period pieces. This is the biggest set I've made as it includes 6 separate items (7 if I count each earring!). Take a look!

To entice you further, the Renaissance Island location has the silver ring as a freebie! Always Eclectic at Renaissance Island.

Both sets are available at Renaissance Island, and the individual pieces are available at the main store as well as the sets.  Always Eclectic Main Store

One of the reasons I do period jewelry is that I love period clothing! I wouldn't want to wear the stuff in real life as it is way too heavy and hot. But, in SL it is light as a feather and everyday has perfect weather so it's not a problem! Period pieces involve an interesting challenge. For instance, the jewels have less facets in medieval times. They didn't have the tools to do the very delicate faceting that they did in later years. So, no, I wasn't being lazy using kind of squarish jewels - I was trying my best to be authentic! ;-)))

Anyway, back to work! I have ideas for Halloween rolling around in my head - now they need to roll out onto some prims!! And don't forget the Steam 7 hunt item waiting for you at the main store!

See you soon!

Always Eclectic to be in the WOMENstuff Hunt!

Yes! We're in the WOMENstuff hunt! This is fabulous news - lots of exposure - lots of new people to meet! I am SO excited to hear this news!!! Now to work on the giftee!!

I learn more about having my own land and store all the time. No yelling to the landlord when something doesn't look right - just dig in and fix it! Need to find a place to put something? Move something in the main store? Create a new display outside? Create a new building outside? The decisions are all mine.

This is good and bad. Good because I get to do what I think best. Bad because it does take away from creating jewelry. I'm trying valiantly to balance the two. So far I'm reasonably successful - I think.

First, onward to more recent. I'm finishing up a new release....it is cool....very....different from most things I've done before. Then Halloween....

Never ending! And don't forget to come by for the Steam 7 giftee!

Always Eclectic is now a part of WOMENstuff!

Yes, it's true - Always Eclectic and I are members of WOMENstuff. A couple pieces of paperwork and I'll have my designer tag! w00t!!!!

Of course, this means I'll be applying to be in the WOMENstuff hunt starting in November. YES!!!

The New Always Eclectic Main Store is OPEN!!!!!

YES! It's all together, um, mostly, and I made it in time for the start of Steam 7! I thought I was pretty prepared but I kept thinking of loose ends - and just thought of another one!

First, a pic of the new place - not the greatest but I'll get better ones later.

Doesn't do it justice - you don't see the landing point in the gazebo or the pretty stream, or the weeping willow or the.....well, you get the picture. Yes, I'm proud of it - it was a lot of work and I really like how it turned out.

Also, a new release and a couple in the wings....this comes in 9 different colors.

Also, I really, really like how my Steam 7 hunt item turned out. I tried for a totally different look this time. Let me know what you think.

Now, the list of things you have to do when you move stores....and I KNOW this isn't everything. This is just so you appreciate and understand when your favorite store moves, they have to WANT to move as it's a lot of work.

- Find a new location - the biggest piece of all - where? how much is tier? how many prims? what kind of sim? etc., etc., etc.

- Create a building - I chose to do this before I bought the land so I could, more or less, plunk the building down and start. That plan sorta worked. I still ended up changing some things since I rushed it a bit to make Steam 7.

- Create new merchandise! Can't open a new store without at least a couple of new releases!

- Do all the thingies to reset your merchandise vendors to the new location and TEST them all! Or at least I test them all and probably still missed something.

- Try to remember all the places your landmark is and change it - classified ads, ad boards, online sources, and OH!!! If you put an LM in your merchandise, you need to change it in all of the merchandise packaging too! That was a job and a half. I can't imagine the work if you had a big store.

- Landscape - and ideally have a plan before you start so you don't redo things. I, of course, did not do that and changed my mind at least 3 times before I finally made up my mind. Arghhhh! All self directed ARGHHH!

- Decorate the store if so desired - I desire, but haven't gotten to that part yet - getting there!

- Notify any hunts you are in that you've moved.

- Are you having an opening sale?? A promotion? Event?

- Let your group members and friends know.

- Post on your blog! ;-ppp

I'm sure there are a lot of things I have forgetten. As you see, it is not a five minute task. However, I love my new store! I hope you like it too!

Doing research for a better product

One of my new, unrelease creations needs something a bit better for a resizer. In fact, a script that would allow scaling and repositioning groups of prims would be ideal.

I'm amazed at the differences between the various products. They all do different things, and none seem to do all of what I want. If I combined several I could get everything but that gets pricey. So I'm still pondering this one.

I'm planning out my Halloween and Christmas treats - have some neat stuff  planned! You'll just have to wait and see - I think it's pretty cool!

I also found a great texturer that likes new ideas! Kaliana Ranica, owner of Eternal Creativity, has a lot  of fabulous textures for jewelry and many other things. The prices are fabulous also! Stop over there if you get a chance. Friendly and quality!

It seems each set I create is vastly different from the others. I tend not to be able to reuse a lot of things. While that makes the creations take more time, it means you  get something different each time.

Back to the creativity machine!

Okay, bad blogger - me I mean!!!

Sometimes you'd just like to chuck real life and just have SL. Not at option I suppose. Ah well, on to more fun things.....

Always Eclectic was featured in a hunt blog in June during the Accessories Hunt - how fun! And it was a very nice blog indeed by NatashaAngelfire - http://natashaangelfire.blogspot.com/2012/06/100th-post-accessories-hunt-prizes.html

I will admit I was prodded by a class I went to the other day, second marketing class I've attended by Kat Alderson, owner of Clutter. Even if I don't agree with everything she says, she always gives me ideas and makes me pay attention to what I'm doing.
Time has been just flying by and I've been creating lots of fun stuff. This month, Always Eclectic is participating in two hunts.....

For the Pool Party Hunt, two sets of pendants for ladies and gents containing your own personal, operating waterfall! This was a fun summer creation so I called it Summer Splash!

For the Past and Future Hunt, I decided to dig into the past. One of the first complex pattern beads was called a Chevron. The original, traditional colors are red, white and blue. These chevron necklaces are the result.

For September, Always Eclectic has been accepted into Steam 7! And I already have the prize created - it's awesome! Something completely different for me.

Stop by soon!

Working hard......

Whew! Two hunts for May to prepare for, and it just keeps on going! I've created some very interesting items for hunts recently.

This set is in the Totally Me hunt. Music is one of my passions. I love to sing and really enjoy singing in my choir, the BeckRidge Chorale. This is one thing that keeps me busy, particularly in December and April.

For the 'It's Fun to Be 5' Prim Perfect hunt, I created an item for the Garden Party theme - a floral corsage/boutonniere suitable for any garden party.

I've also created a new Renaissance set that blew me away when I got done....here's a photo - will have it out soon....One of the earring sets will be the freebie at my Renaissance Island location.

Online product list all updated....but more to come...

I took some time and got the store inventory, the marketplace inventory and the product pics here on the blog all in alignment. I guess that means I've been a busy girl!

Take a look at the listings  - you might see something new. The store group gets some nice freebies and is worth joining.

And most of all, thank you for your business! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your choice to shop at Always Eclectic.

A View from the Outside....

This week, I did a presentation at my RL job about Second Life. During the preparation, I took several colleagues over to Always Eclectic and rezzed my Pearl Fringed necklace for them. Sometimes those of us that are in SL a lot tend to forget the true 'Wow' factor that drew us to this environment in the first place. Getting comments from others as I do things that seem perfectly normal now, like creating detailed jewelry, rezzing a prim, changing clothes or flying, is definitely fun and enlightening. How on earth did the ability to fly become a mental 'normal'???

Anyway, I suspect that I may have interested not only in Second Life, but in virtual worlds in general. In my mind, this is not only a help to me in RL, but potentially in SL too. The more ways one's name can be spread around, the better.

So to all of us that regularly populate SL, stop now and again and think how incredibly cool it is to have the abilities we do. Virtual worlds rock!

Steam Hunt 6 Photo Session!

Adam Phoenix, aka kineticpen, came by to do one of his favorite things: take pictures of all the Steam Hunt prizes and their locations and store owners. Today was my turn.

He is certainly a perfectionist on his photos but if you review the entire collection you'll see the work is worth it! He managed to get the Gears Brooch I made featured quite nicely - take a look at his coat cuff.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/24509037@N00/6951752091/in/photostream/lightbox/
In other news, the new March freebie is out - I'm really please with these items. I love it when I learn a new technique and can apply it right away and improve a product! Here's a peek:

More new things coming.....a new group gift soon!

Now a FabFree Designer!!!

Always Eclectic and I are now on the FabFree list as Designers!!! w00t!!! They just don't let anyone get that status. You have to go through an approval process to show that all of your content is original, etc. And I passed!!! I expected to, but still - w00t!!!!

Anyway, February hunts are about to end and March hunts are about to start. I'm in the Steam Hunt, Abstract Artist's Hunt and most likely the Relay for Life Hunt coming. My imagination is challenged frequently.

I have a cute item for St. Patrick's Day nearly done......stay tuned!

Sunday, February 5, 2012

Love is in the air with the February weather - Brrr!!

I don't know about anyone else, but I spend February freezing!!! To warm things up a bit, I've created some new items for you that should help you find a little sizzle, subtly....

This first set is a Renaissance period set based on some earrings I found. Lovely! Elegant! And the rubies have a life to them....

This pearl fringe set is based on a necklace I saw. It really emphasizes the neckline and face, as well as that elegant wrist....

There are a number of old hunt items that I'll be putting out for sale. Plus, some really nice hunt items this month AND a special group freebie at the main store.

If you haven't been by the store in a while, stop over. You'll be surprised!!!

Hunts keep you busy!

I've been busily creating items for the February hunts and released some new Victorian wear in store. If you haven't stopped by in a while, the store has been rearranged to allow the jewelry to shine through more easily. I've also added some pictures wearing the jewelry to give more of an idea of how it looks a well as the true purpose for the store.

One of the toughest things about owning a business, whether in real life or in second life, is how to promote it without breaking the budget. If you have your main store on land you control, you can place a fairly cheap advertisement tied to your land. If you don't own land, then there are fewer options.

I've rented an ad-board at the Happy Hippo Building School for two reasons. First, I hope to drive some traffic to my store. Second, I do it to help Victoria Paule, owner of Happy Hippo. The ad boards help her make the tier payment on her land, so I don't begrudge the money as I learned a lot at HHBS as I started out, have done some teaching there, and have many friends from there. However, it doesn't seem to be helping with traffic.

The hunts are another mechanism to drive traffic. With the Renaissance Hunt, I received a lot of store traffic as it was a large hunt. The hunts I'm involved in now are smaller and drive smaller audiences to the store. This is making me consider other options.

One option is a classified ad. I will probably end up doing this. I've heard mixed reviews about the effectiveness of these ads. In an effort to determine what works, I'm trying one thing at a time. It's about time for the next thing in the arsenal so I believe I will place a classified ad.

Someone suggested getting my store featured by bloggers. I may try this also. I've been trying to get a bit more merchandise before I contact them. That too is a balancing act. I was rejected by one hunt group as not having enough merchandise. Since all my items are custom and different, creating new items takes a while so I will never be terribly fast in creating new merchandise.

A friend suggested getting a midnight mania board. I'm contemplating this as well. I'm really not fond of these as it takes away from the themed, period look in the store. When, again, I get a bit more merchandise, and I start using the second floor, I may put one up there. This one really makes me think - is it a necessary evil or a huge mistake? It's hard to say.

And to think I didn't have anything I wanted to say when I started writing today.....

Onward ho - 2012 holds hope and promise!

Busy busy - I have some new merchandise out - a lovely ruby heart brooch and earring set - or completed! Will be putting it out for sale shortly. New order for the next Dr. Who ring - thank goodness for the Whovians! Signed up for 2 February hunts and working on the freebies for those - don't forget this month's freebies and the prizes for the hunts the store is in - Trick or Treat (Farewell to Winter) and Poppin' Penguins!!

I keep hoping at some point I'll be able to use a snippet of something to help make something else but not too much so far. Since I don't want to settle for something close, I find myself making sculpts to get exactly what I want. Of course, that makes things take longer.....or does for me anyway. At least the brooch clasp I made can be reused.

In researching the brooch, I found that Victorian ladies didn't really wear necklaces very much. With those high necklines, where would you put a necklace? They wore some chokers, and a lot of brooches and bracelets. They also tended to wear the bracelets in sets of two, the same for each wrist. Interesting.....but for the Sl audience, I think I have to make necklaces also, or for most things.

Off to put out that ruby set - I find I like the paperwork far less than I like the making of the items - go figure!

Welcome 2012!!

A new year always seems to bring hope and dreams. Besides the usual world peace and stamp out world hunger, I have some wishes for Always Eclectic...

.....Continue expanding the jewelry lines. I'm envisioning 3 lines - Victorian, Renaissance, and anything that doesn't fit into the first two!

.....Take or at least consider custom work requests. I completed one recently for the Dr. Who store in Mieville Wells (Who's Who). The owner seemed quite pleased with the outcome. There is more than one way to increase brand awareness!

.....Create a line of jewelry for Tinies. I'm not sure how I want to take this. I could just make reduced sized versions of my normal lines, or I could create silly stuff that would only make sense on Tinies. I think I may take a tiny, Tiny survey to see.

.....Have a stall or small store in each specialty area - Victorian, Renaissance and Tinies. This is easy enough to do for Victorian (already there!) and Tinies (there's a Victorian Tinies sim (Mieville Shelley) and there's Raglan). Renaissance seems a bit more difficult as most of the sims seem to be roleplay sims. This will probably take some research.

.....Learn about mesh in relation to jewelry making. I keep hearing that mesh is great for jewelry - I'd like to find out why and how mesh is created, etc. This is a stretch goal as I don't anticipate being ready for it for a while. I'm learning enough the way I'm going between Sculpt Studio and Blender and Photoshop and Illustrator.

.....Trust my own instincts. Recently I got myself into a, um, opinion war between a couple of strong willed, well meaning people. It got very uncomfortable for me. If I had stuck with my guns in the first place, I would not have had nearly the problems I ended up with.

I think that's plenty!!! I'll try to readdress these points periodically to see if I'm making progress or if the direction has changed. Makes sense for now though!

Happy New Year everyone!

Riendra
